Forget Wimbledon 2016, you won’t see any better tennis played on English soil than that of the Ambleside Year 4 Tennis Team! For some of the team it was their first opportunity for them to represent the school in a sports competition and you could see the nerves as they warmed up.
Thursday 19th May saw the Year 4 tennis team travel to the Nottingham Tennis Centre for the Nottingham Mini Tennis Tournament. The games began and with 36 teams taking part in the competition there was lots of tennis to be played. Ambleside got off to a flying start and got some wins under their belts. Confidence in the camp grew. The players were stood cheering each other on and really began to be a force to be reckoned with.
Before you knew it Ambleside were through to the quarter finals where we faced Claremont. The team looked nervous again as they realised the importance of the game but just as before, when the game got started the children showed great skill and composure to make their way to the semi-final.
Unfortunately we were outplayed by Fernwood but it was all to play for in the third-place playoff against Whitemoor. It was emphasised to children to enjoy the game and not worry about the result but you could that they really wanted to finish with a win. The game finished a draw 2-2 with one of our boys and one of the girls winning. The result then went to a count back of points scored where Ambleside won 30-24. The children couldn’t believe it and were filled with joy. Miss Groves ran out of the tennis centre with a smile across her face proud as punch of the team’s success. Well done!
